How to Store Olive Oil to Retain Its Health Benefits by Laura Ng

Olive oil is sensitive to heat, light and air. So, what is the best way to store olive oil?

Here are some practical ways to store your olive oil and keep it away from heat, light and air, so that it’ll retain its nutritional values as much as possible and provide maximum health benefits for you.

Storing Olive Oil

Keep your olive oil best in a cool (room temperature works fine), dark place away from stove or other heat-generating appliances. That way it won’t “see” the light and “feel” the heat so easily and turn rancid.

Here’s a tip for you if you wish to save cost and buy olive oil bottled in clear container – transfer it to tinted glass container which helps to keep out light or non-reactive metal such as stainless steel (if you have it at home).

Another trick to lower your cost is wrap the clear container with tinted or dark-colored paper (light-colored paper works fine but not as effective in blocking light as dark-colored paper). This can prevent light from “attacking” the oil too.

But make sure you keep the oil away from heat when you use that budget paper-wrapping method as dark-colored paper absorbs heat well.

If temperature surrounding the olive oil rises, then keep it in the refrigerator. But olive oil turns solid when chilled, so you might find it difficult to use. Therefore, before you refrigerate the oil, you may want to pour a small amount into a separate container for frequent usage.

Alternatively, you can bring it out of the fridge earlier, say an hour before use, for it to thaw.

When transferring olive oil into separate container, make sure you completely clean and dry its interior before you use it to store the oil as oxygen in water may oxidize the oil, increasing its acidity level and depreciating its nutritional value and health benefits as a result.

Also, you should not expose olive oil to air and light too much during transfer. Hence, be nimble with your action and don’t do the transfers too often. For example, avoid transferring it from container A to B, only to realize container B doesn’t fit well and you go on to transfer from container B to C. You’ll spoil the oil this way. So, make up your mind before you transfer. And always screw the cap tightly to block air from entering.

These little acts can help preserve the oil’s phytonutrients as well as extend its shelf life.

Never Store Olive Oil for Too Long

Spanish researchers find that whether you keep virgin olive oil under perfect condition or not, the quality and nutritional values will gradually deteriorate over time. So, make sure you use the oil as soon as you buy it, don’t store it like wine. It doesn’t get better.

I suggest that you buy at most 1 liter at a time and try to finish it within 3 months. I use it in my daily dietary intake and I usually finish it in less than 2 months. Just bear in mind, the longer the unconsumed oil stays on your shelf, the lower its nutritional value and health benefits.

Tip: Refrigerating Premium extra-virgin olive oil of very good acidity level (e.g. as low as 0.225%) can affect its flavor. So, it’s best to store it at room temperature. Refrigerating other grades of olive oil doesn’t affect their quality and flavor.

Coconut Oil for Acne by Laura Ng

There had been some arguments over the use of coconut oil for acne, that is, some got glimmering flawless skin after using coconut oil to treat acne while some suffered from acne breakout – worse than before! What actually happened?

First of all, when using coconut oil for acne treatment, make sure you use virgin coconut oil ONLY as it is non-comedogenic (i.e. it doesn’t clog your skin pores). If you use any refined coconut oil, you can have your pores clogged up even worse.

Secondly, as coconut oil bears powerful anti-toxin components within its oil structure, you may experience what we commonly called the “healing crisis”. For example in acne treatment, you may enjoy smoother skin in the first few days, but as the detox effect in the oil penetrates even deeper into your skin and push the toxins up to the surface, you may undergo an acne breakout, which could be worse than before you apply coconut oil to your skin.

Such unexpected “backfiring” could freak you out and make you think that coconut oil aggravates your acne problem, which in fact, coconut oil is proving its effectiveness in purging the toxins which have been built up underneath your skin for years.

The more toxins built-up, the longer it’ll take for your acne-prone skin to heal.

However, for people especially housewives or those working at home, they’re smart enough to know about the healing crisis occurring in acne treatment with coconut oil, and moreover they can stay at home without showing faces outside, so they get to stick to the end of the healing crisis and wind up enjoying what virgin coconut oil brings to them – an acne-free and flawless skin.

Here’s a comment I extracted from a forum regarding the arguments over the breakout of acne after using coconut oil for acne treatment:

“The same thing happened to me with coconut oil. Started out with immediate improvement and then got terrible acne for about 4 weeks. I stuck with it and my skin is getting better every single day. I think I just had so much crap underneath my skin that it took a long time to purge it out. Now my pores are smaller than they’ve ever been and for the past 2 weeks I haven’t had any new pimples and the ones I had are going away quickly.” ~ Maja

There are a few more cases like that, which are the real-life experiences for using coconut oil for acne treatment. I suggest that you put a dab of coconut oil on the inside of your elbow area first to test for any allergic reaction. Wait for a whole day and observe for any unusual skin reaction. Allergy should take effect within a day.

Honestly, allergy to coconut oil is rare because coconut oil is classified as hypoallergenic (low allergy-risk) food. Many a time, a presumed coconut oil reaction like a skin rash is nothing more than the body expelling toxins, a cleansing reaction actually.

What I would recommend is, if you’re working in an environment where meeting people is inevitable and you want to give coconut oil a natural shot to improve your acne problem, apply just a small amount every night before you sleep. Even when breakout, you won’t get so much serious than many other people do. And of course, the toxin-purging effect will be slower and your skin will heal slower too.

On top of that, while the oil is detoxifying your body, during the period, eat more fresh fruits and veggies that contain plenty of natural skin-beneficial nutrients. Cut your meat intake totally as meat contains tons of toxins that may accumulate easily during the detoxification process and prolong the length of healing. Imagine when you’re clearing the trash but yet someone is dumping more garbage into the trash, how fast do you think you’ll empty the trash completely?

Also, include exercise as part of your skin detox to help sweat out those toxins so as to mitigate breakouts (if any). And keep your stress level as low as possible as stressful condition may trigger hormonal imbalance and lead to acne breakout too.

In other words, if you solely rely on coconut oil for treating acne but yet you’re not executing any other supplementary actions to support the detoxification process, you’ll probably suffer from a serious breakout that could last for weeks and delay your healing process.

Based on my personal experience with using coconut oil for my skin care, coconut oil does perform very well at removing built up toxins in my skin. The question is, are you game enough to leave your skin to coconut oil’s care for a natural cleanse and detox where you might experience a breakout first before you get to enjoy beautiful, flawless and youthful skin? Think about it.

Benefits of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil by Laura Ng

Before I show you the benefits of coconut oil, I just wanted to let you know that there’s in fact no such thing as “extra virgin coconut oil”. That’s because this healthful oil is not officially classified based on its production method, acidity level and flavor, unlike olive oil. So, when companies label their coconut oil as ‘extra virgin’, it simply means the same as virgin coconut oil.

They do not mean to cheat the consumers but just to tell you that their virgin oil is of the best unrefined quality, that’s why they use ‘extra virgin coconut oil’ as the label for that matter.

Virgin coconut oil carries the most health benefits as compared to other types due to its full nutritional values being retained through its cold-pressed extraction method. The most powerful nutrient in it is none other than its abundant supply of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs).

Because of its massive amount of MCFAs, “extra” virgin coconut oil can help you ward off diseases like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer and many others. It can also help you kill most viruses, fungi and bacteria. Even the killer HIV is no match for coconut oil.

Besides healing you internally, it does wonders to your skin too – relieving symptoms associated with psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis and cure your dry, flaky skin in matter of days. Oh, it helps you purge out all your acnes and return you a smooth, spotless skin too.

How about losing some unwanted body fat? Yup, coconut oil promotes weight loss too.

Sounds too good to be true? Don’t take my word for it, give it a shot. Make sure you get the quality organic virgin coconut oil which carries the most health benefits and comes with a distinctive, mild coconut aroma. Also, as there are many different brands you can choose from, I suggest that you buy the smallest bottle of a brand first and try it out until you lock on to a particular brand that you like the best.

And remember, begin with 1 tablespoon spread out in a day first for at least 3 days to see how your body reacts to this super food. You should not experience any negative response with virgin oil. Once you feel safe with it, you can up your intake to 3 – 4 tablespoons daily.

In fact, the best way to reap the full benefits of virgin coconut oil is to consume and use it topically. You’ll gain extra boost to your health and restore your baby-like skin faster.

How To Cook The Best Olive Oil Bread In The World

Olive Oil bread is fantastic to eat with anything, but goes particularly well with pasta and any Italian food. My great friend big Tony showed me how to make the tastiest olive oil bread in the whole world, and it actually tastes better then anything I have ever had served to me in a restaurant. My mate big tony is a panel beater of Sicilian background but he cooks like a professional chef and his family own a well-known Italian restaurant in our city.

I thought I should explain all that because when you eat the finished product it really will blow your mind, and you are going to be left wondering how a panel beater could pass on a recipe like the one below.

Tony had me write all of the ingredients down and do some shopping before calling over to his place. All I had to do was turn up with a carton of persona beer and receive a cooking lesson like no other. My shopping list had me picking up the following items dry yeast, white sugar, flour, olive oil(best you can find) and of course the persona so Tony and I could get a little drunk as we made the olive oil bread.

Cooking with Tony felt a little like being in a scene from the God Father. We had Sinatra playing loudly as we through our ingredients around on the bench and began to create bread that tastes like no other. So anyway, we laid our ingredients out on the bench.

Step one: Heat a half cup of water to about 120 degrees and then mix four tablespoons of olive oil. One teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of salt and a half spoon of active dry yeast. All in a large bowl and then mix in well with the warm water.

Step 2: tip two, a bit cups of flour into the bowl, and use your hands to make a soft ball. Take your time with this step and really kneed your hands around until you have a soft perfectly formed ball.

Step three: Add additional flour to ensure that your ball becomes soft and easy to kneed.

Step four: Place your perfectly round ball into a really well greased bowl. Place a cover completely over the bowl and leave it for exactly ten minutes. It will have almost doubled in size by then.

Step five: Once you return shape your bread anyway you like. Tony showed me in a way that left the dough in a large perfect ball shape. Place the ball or whatever you have created on a greased up piece of paper and cover again, this time leaving for half an hour. Again allowing the bread to rise.

My suggestion at this point is to drink two quality beers as it will help with the creative process and it will make the bread taste better in the end I promise.

Step 6: Have you oven preheated to 390 degrees and then place the bread into the oven and leave for exactly 32 minutes. Your bread will have a lovely glow about it at this point.

Step 7: break two eggs in a bowl and whisk for 3 minutes, then brush two spoons of egg onto your bread and place back in the oven for a further 4 minutes.

The result will be bread that tastes like it was made in heaven or maybe even a prison in Italy. Either way I am confident you will love how this bread tastes and when big Tony offered to teach me how he cooked pasta I was there in a heart beat.

How to Know You’re Getting the Best Fish Oil Supplements by Laurel Cohen

How can you be sure that you are getting the best fish oil supplements, before you buy? Reading the label can help, but not all manufacturers provide all of the necessary information.

There is a great deal of information to consider before you settle on the right brand. Let’s start with added flavorings, fragrances or colors.

A number of manufacturers add lemon oil or artificial lemon flavor. The manufacturers that use these additives claim that it helps prevent burping or stomach upset. There are two concerns.

One is that the added flavor or fragrance can be used to mask the taste or smell of rancid oils. Rancid oils contain free radicals, which are a cause of cellular aging.

Rancidity occurs when the catch is left to rot on the deck or dock before being processed. Laboratories can test the freshness of the product by looking at the level of oxidation or the peroxide value.

This finding would be listed on a Certificate of Analysis or COA. Generally speaking, you won’t find a COA posted on the back of a bottle, but some manufacturers do post a copy on their websites.

The label of ingredients should list added flavors, artificial preservatives and other additives. The best fish oil supplements will contain few additives, although a touch of mixed tocopherols (the natural form of vitamin E) and a dash of rosemary extract may be added to prolong the shelf life.

Oxidation should not be a problem once the oils are encapsulated. But, natural vitamin E and rosemary extract are good preservatives. They serve to ensure that the supplement will continue to provide maximum health benefits for as long as you take it.

If you can find a company that posts a copy of their COA, then you have likely found one of the best fish oil supplements. The information provided by a COA includes the minimum amount of omega-3s provided in each capsule, as well as the minimum amount of DHA and EPA.

DHA and EPA are specific omega-3s. They are responsible for the health benefits of supplementation and those related to eating more seafood.

The average consumer brand consists of 18% EPA and 12% DHA. It’s a good idea to look for a brand that contains more DHA than EPA.

The body can easily convert DHA to EPA, because the chain of fatty acid in EPA is shorter than in DHA. But, in order to convert EPA to DHA, another fatty acid must be present. Since the chain is longer, something needs to be added. It is always easier to take away than it is to add.

This is also the reason that choosing the best fish oil supplements is a better idea than choosing a flax seed supplement. Flax contains only ALA, which is the shortest of all of the long-chained omegs-3 fatty acids.

This is not everything that needs to be considered if you want to be sure you are getting the best fish oil supplements. But, it’s a good start.
