When the diagnosis of hemochromatosis is made it is important to adjust the diet so that too much iron is not being absorbed because of an improper diet. However such adjustment need not be at the expense of enjoying life and good food.

The biggest considerations are not to take medications which contain iron, consume too much alcohol or Vitamin C. Excessive alcohol consumption which has shown to greatly increase iron absorption in those with hemochromatosis is set at a level of 60g a day. Thus it is important to stay well below this level. The limit should be 30g a day in men and 20g a day in women. When a patient has two copies of C282Y and drinks excessive alcohol there is a multiplying affect – not an additive affect – on the absorption of iron. It is deadly to drink too much alcohol if you have hemochromatosis. The effect of excessive alcohol consumption on hemochromatosis cannot be overstressed.

Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron. It is wise only to consume a moderate amount and not take Vitamin C tablets. Vitamin C has been known to precipitate heart palpitations in those with hemochromatosis.

About three years ago, I tried the Atkins Diet for losing weight. The Atkins Diet is a very low-carb, high protein regimen. I did lose weight- almost 60 pounds. I didn’t feel hungry- in fact, my body completely lost any appetite for food, including “mouth hunger” and “the munchies” from indulging in another bad habit of mine, which I gave up last year. Additionally, the acid reflux that had been plaguing me for a few years was gone after just a few weeks of following the diet.

I followed the diet to the letter, not cheating, going through the two week “induction” period, of very low carbohydrate intake (almost NO carb intake, really), and tested my urine with the keto sticks every morning, first things, to make sure that I was maintaining ketosis. I got both the basic book about the diet and the Atkins Cookbook, and learned how to make some delicious food. I also used the Atkins Shake mixes and canned shakes, for when I was at work in the morning, and had to gulp down a quick breakfast.

The great thing was that the weight came off where I needed it off the most- in my stomach and abdomen. Many experts say that people who “carry” their excess weight in the belly are more prone to Diabetes than those who are equally overweight, but with an even distribution of excess poundage over the body. I was wearing clothes that I hadn’t worn in a few years.

I was on this “funky diet”, as my disapproving doctor called it, for about five months. I looked great and didn’t feel hungry. What stopped me from continuing was pain- sharp, intense pain in my kidneys that started suddenly one day. I found out that kidney failure was a hazard of following this diet. I stopped, and the pounds came back with a vengeance- probably gained more back that I had lost. Despite taking a multi-vitamin and several other supplements every day, I became deficient in certain phytonutrients, including Vitamin C. The last few weeks I was following the diet, I had no immune system, and caught colds easily. I also still have a small lump in my left leg- whether it is a small gout or something else from the diet, I don’t know. But the big thing was the intense pain in my kidneys, which got me to stop immediately.

I’m still looking for the diet plan that works for me. Over the years, I have counted calories, done Weight Watchers ( 3 times), just plain went hungry, and still haven’t found a permanent solution. When you are told that your blood test showed your iron levels to be within the correct reference range, it may not mean that the range was correct for hair regrowth.

Hair loss studies:

During a study, 153 women who had been diagnosed with telogen effluvium (rapid shedding) were examined. 72 percent of women in the pre-menopausal group were found to have iron deficiency as the cause of Telogen Effluvium.

Reference ranges are around 40ng/mL. However this needs to be higher if you are looking to regrow lost hair.

While iron deficiency is the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in pre-menopausal women, medications and hormone changes are the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in post-menopausal women.

Besides being a trigger for Telogen Effluvium where the majority of hair shedding occurs, iron deficiency can also be the most likely underlying cause when hair loss is subtle; slowly thinning out over many months or even years. This is more common among women of childbearing age due to menstruation and pregnancy. Iron is found mainly in the blood, and accordingly substantial amounts can be lost in childbirth.

Iron is also involved in the oxygenation of your body’s red blood cells. Iron play a significant role in various body functions, but it is also essential for sustaining normal growth and maintenance of hair.

In order for the body to maintain a sufficient balance of iron, the amount excreted must be replaced by the amount ingested in the diet. When the amount of iron used exceeds the amount we absorbe from our food, the body has no other option than to draw upon our limited reserves. The fall of iron stores normally passes through several stages: lowered iron stores, iron depletion and iron deficiency anemia.

Only about 10% of ingested iron is absorbed and this is dependent on the type of food in the diet. Certain foods may inhibit the absorption of iron, tea and coffee, bran and egg albumin.

Whereas other foods may enhance the absorption of iron, i.e. vitamin C, and flesh foods. (The Vitamin C and iron rich food must be eaten at the same time).

In meat, 65% of iron is bound to the heme molecule (from hemoglobin and myoglobin), which is relatively easily absorbed. The rest of the iron in meat and all iron in plants is non-heme iron which is nore difficult to absorb.

Hair follicles are known to contain ferritin, and when the circulating stores of ferritin decline then these stores are called upon to ensure support for more essential cells, such as bone marrow.

The loss of this ferritin from the follicle cells can affect the ability of the hair to grow. This leads to the development of fine non pigmented hair.
